You are here: Home / Montessori Education / Director’s Blog Vol.1 Auto-Education

November 7, 2019

Hi Everyone!

This is Yukari, Director of Montessori International Academy.

We are happy to announce the MIA monthly blog to share what we are doing here at MIA, activities you can do with your child (the Montessori way), and much more!

Today’s blog post is the very first, so let’s get started!

What is Montessori? How does Montessori matter?

Maria Montessori said all children have the ability to educate themselves called “Auto-Education”. When we learn to trust children with this ability they will develop their own independence, responsibility, and well-being. So what is our job as teachers and parents? To make sure to help children fully use auto-education to develop themselves. When we do this, a child’s path to learning becomes more fun and exciting.

Let me explain how this works with more details with some examples. I hope it will help you to have an idea of how Auto-Education works!💡

When the babies are born, they need our constant caring and nurturing.  However you soon will find that those babies starting to learn how to walk by crawling, standing, and then finally walking, one step at a time. Do you have to teach them how to do it?  No, they all do these steps by themselves. Babies sometimes fall down and hurt themselves while they are trying to walk, but they never stop trying. Where is this energy coming from? This constant eagerness of wanting is the energy that fuels “Auto-Education”.

Just like walking, learning to move their hands are also an example of auto education. Going through lots of hands-on activities helps them gain fine motor skills.  As a result, they are soon able to properly hold and use a pencil. This is all Auto- Education!!

Please take the time to observe your children carefully when you see children willing to try to accomplish something. You will almost certainly see an example of Auto-Education. 🤗
